BCA-StoneCrest Center has established guidelines to provide access to the appropriate level of care and services based on the patient’s assessed needs.

  1. 1. Voluntary Admissions: The person being admitted must sign the Voluntary Admission Forms. A spouse, friend, etc., is not acceptable and is not legal. The only time it is acceptable is if the person admitted has a legal guardian. This would include parents/guardian of a minor.

  2. 2. Involuntary Admissions: If the adult needing to be admitted or the parents/guardian refuses admission or refuses to sign the Voluntary Admission Forms, a family member may not “sign them in.” The involuntary committal process may be begun. The process begins when a referral source contacts BCA-StoneCrest Center’s Admitting Department with a possible involuntary admission. The Emergency Room is asked if the Petition and Certificate are current. The Petition must be less than 10 days old and the, on current forms and written in black ink. The Clinical Certificate must meet the same criteria as the Petition, but must be less than 24 hours old. (Michigan Mental Health Code 330.1430)

Once the Patient arrives at BCA-StoneCrest Center with the original Petition and Clinical Certificate, the paperwork must again be checked to determine that the Petition is less than 10 days old, and that the Clinical Certificate from the Emergency Room is less than 24 hours old and that the other criteria is met also.

All patients are offered the Adult Voluntary Admission Form (102).

If the paperwork from the referral source is not correct, steps must be taken to ensure their correctness. If at all possible, the patient should not be transported back to the ER. If it is determined that the paperwork is incorrect and the Patient signs the Adult Formal Voluntary Application for Hospitalization, than the BCA-StoneCrest Center physician who will handle the case should be notified. The physician should be told about the unacceptable paperwork and the fact that the patient has signed the Voluntary Application. If the physician is willing to accept the Adult Formal Voluntary Application from the patient, then the patient can be admitted as Voluntary, however, the ER should be contacted to provide a Petition and Clinical Certification that can be used.

When the admission is completed, the information on the admission including name of patient, physician, admission date and time, Petition date, Clinical Certificate date, County of Residence, and whether or not the patient signed the Voluntary is communicated to Nursing who informs the physician.

  3. 3. Admission criteria shall limit admissions to those persons whose principal diagnosis and focus of treatment upon admission is a mental disorder according to the latest edition of the American Association’s “DSM IV” Axis I diagnosis.
